Big Game Fishing

The Pemba channel

Situated off the coast of East Africa this amazing body of blue water offers possibly some of the best sport fishing in the world. The Pemba Channel stretches almost 35 miles and separates the mainland from the island of Pemba. Due to a gentle northern current, the channel is home to a concentrated number of bait fish, which makes for a perfect feeding ground for Sailfish, Marlin (black, blue and striped), Broad billed Sailfish, yellow fin tuna and Shark. Other species like Wahoo, Dorado, Kingfish, Giant Trevally and other lesser game fish can be found in abundance.

The billfish season usually starts during the time of Kaskazi which is the north east wind. This blows during December to March and allows for warmer and calmer seas.

From mid March to November the South West wind, Kusi which is a cooler time, but choppier, brings in the Yellow Fin Tuna. This area allows for great fishing all year round though. A tag and release system is encouraged for all billfish and sharks caught.

If the idea of big game fishing off the coast of East Africa appeals to you, then please consult one of our Frontier Safari Specialists. This can be added on to one of our fantastic East African safaris or arranged on its own. But consider this – you will be close enough to take a trip to the Massai Mara as well, so why not!
